STATIC: how to use the wormhole mapper
Everything a tester needs: getting in, setting up your first map, how the chain draws itself, pasting signatures, tracking mass and lifetime, sharing with your corp, and how to report a bug.
STATIC is a wormhole mapper. It follows your characters as they jump and draws your chain for you, and it keeps track of your signatures, what each hole leads to, and how much mass and life each hole has left.
It is in invite-only testing at map.downthechain.net. It is free, and it is staying free. If something on this page does not match what you see, that is a bug, and the Discord is where to tell us.
Getting in
- You need an invite code or a share link to someone's map the first time. After that, signing in with EVE is all it takes.
- On the sign-in page, paste your invite code if you have one, then press Log in with EVE Online. You sign in on CCP's own page. STATIC never sees your password.
- EVE will ask you to approve what STATIC can read: your characters' location, online status, current ship and skills, plus permission to set a destination in your client. That is the full list.
To add your other characters, go to the Maps page and press Add a character. Each one signs in with EVE once and is then linked to your account.
Your first five minutes
- Make a map. On the Maps page, type a name in New map name and press Create map. It opens straight away, and you are its owner.
- Set your home. A new map has no home. Find your home system with the Add a system... box at the top of the map, right-click it and choose Set as home. The header shows its name. Signature pastes go to your home unless you have clicked another system.
- Fly. With share my position ticked for this map on the Maps page (it is on by default), your characters' locations feed the map. The Fleet panel on the left shows each character, its ship, where it is and whether it is online.
- Jump a hole. When you jump, STATIC draws the connection itself. Paste your probe scanner and it starts matching signatures to holes.
How the chain draws itself
STATIC checks where each of your characters is every few seconds while anyone is active (every 5 seconds, or every minute when everyone has been idle for 15 minutes). When a character turns up in a new system, it works out how they got there.
- It only draws a connection it can prove. A jump into or out of a wormhole system is always drawn. A jump between two k-space systems is only drawn if no stargate route could explain it, or if it happened too quickly for gates. If you could have taken gates, it stays unresolved and is not drawn. That is deliberate: a mapper that invents holes is worse than one that misses a few.
- Systems you pass through show as small faded nodes along the top. A system stays on the map once it has a connection, a scan, a status or a label, or if you added it by hand.
- Drawing a connection yourself: shift-click one system, then click the other. Or right-click a system, choose Connect from here..., then click the other one. Esc cancels.
- Deleting a connection keeps it deleted, unless someone jumps it again.
- Re-derive rebuilds every connection from the jumps STATIC has stored. Auto-layout re-arranges the map outwards from home.
Getting around: drag the background to pan, use the mouse wheel to zoom, and double-click the background (or press 0) to fit the whole chain. + and - zoom.
Reading the map
- Line colour is mass: grey means nobody has assessed it, green is fresh, amber is reduced, red is critical.
- Line thickness is the largest ship class that fits through.
- Dashed lines are end of life. Long dashes with ticks mean someone drew it by hand, rather than STATIC seeing a jump.
- Badges on a system: "3☠ 8m" means three kills in the last 24 hours, the latest 8 minutes ago. "2?" is two unidentified signatures. "1○" is one hole nobody has jumped yet.
Click any system or connection to see it in the Inspector on the right. For a wormhole system that means its class, effect, statics and where they lead, pilots present, recent kills and who tends to turn up. For a k-space system it also shows the nearest high-sec, trade hub and blue-loot buyer, each with a button to set your destination.
Signatures
- In the probe scanner, press Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C.
- Click the system you scanned, so the paste goes to the right place (it goes to home otherwise), and paste into the Signatures box.
- Check the preview, then press Commit.
The result line tells you what changed: signatures added, removed, resolved and kept, and any linked to a hole automatically. Undo reverses your most recent paste.
Lazy delete, on by default, means "this paste is my whole scanner window", so any signature missing from it is removed. Turn it off if you are pasting only part of the list, and missing signatures are kept. If a paste would wipe out a lot at once, STATIC asks you first.
- Nothing you have identified gets lost. If a later scan shows a signature with less detail than before (say, not scanned down yet in a new window), STATIC keeps what it already knew.
- Leads to links a hole signature to where it goes. STATIC fills it in itself when there is only one hole it could be. Otherwise pick from the dropdown. Choosing a system nobody has jumped to draws a hand-made connection.
- The pencil icon (✎) sets a hole's type (such as U210) or a short label. Click the Info cell to add a note.
- Ends is only given for wormholes: the exact expiry once the type is known, or a "no later than" otherwise. Other sites show a dash, because CCP has not published when they despawn, and we will not guess.
- A d-scan pasted into the same box is recognised as a d-scan and stored for that system, so the Inspector can show ships and structures on grid.
Mass, lifetime and rolling
EVE never tells anyone a hole's exact mass or age. It only shows the three shrink stages and the end-of-life warning, so STATIC records what a pilot reports.
- Right-click a connection to set Mass (fresh, reduced, critical) and Life (stable, end-of-life, under 1 hour), or to set the wormhole type.
- Set the type and the Inspector shows where the hole leads, its lifetime, total mass, mass per jump, the largest hull that fits and battleships left (worst case).
- The Inspector's age readout counts from when STATIC first saw the hole, so a hole that was already old when you found it may have less time left.
- Rolling: once the type is set, pick a rolling ship to see the passes and round trips it takes. It works to the worst case of the mass band, so you are never told you have more room than you do.
Setting your destination
Right-click a k-space system and choose Set destination (all characters), or use the set dest buttons in the Inspector. It sets the route on your own characters only, never anyone else's, and replaces their current route. Wormhole systems cannot be a destination in the EVE client, so STATIC does not offer it.
Sharing a map with your corp
On the Maps page, press Manage on a map you own.
- Access grants a whole corporation, alliance or a single character, by exact in-game name. Pick viewer, editor or owner for each. Anyone covered sees a Join button on their Maps page.
- Share links let one person join as viewer or editor. The link is shown once when you make it, so copy it then. You choose how long it lasts and how many times it can be used, and you can revoke it.
- Viewers can look, preview a paste and set their own destination, but every change they try is refused. Only editors and owners feed their position into a shared map.
- share my position is per map, per person. A character's location only ever reaches a map its owner has joined and left this ticked on.
- Leave takes you off a map. Delete this map removes it for everyone, and asks you to type its name first.
The other tabs
- Training shows your characters' skill queues: skill points, what is training, when the queue ends, and attributes. It only ever shows your own characters.
- Board values the sites in a system from a scan. Treat it as experimental. Its "run this" verdicts are tuned to one specific ship fit, so read the ISK figures and ignore the verdicts unless you fly that fit.
Known rough edges
- The home name and the live dot in the header only update when you reload the page.
- Every change to a hole is recorded with who made it and when, but the screen does not show that history yet.
- A viewer still sees the editing buttons. They just do not do anything.
Reporting a bug
Join the Down the Chain Discord and post in #static-testing. The fastest bugs to fix come with:
- what you did, step by step,
- what you expected, and what happened instead,
- a screenshot if it is visual (blank out your J-codes if you would rather not share them),
- roughly when it happened, so it can be found in the logs.
Ideas and "this is confusing" count too. There is also a Report a bug link in the top bar of the app.
Your data
- STATIC keeps your characters' positions, ships and online status, and the scans and notes you add, to draw the maps you have joined. A map's data is stored separately from every other map's.
- EVE's login tokens are stored encrypted.
- Ask in the Discord and your account and everything tied to it is deleted.
